September Fun Tournament

Our last summer tournament will be a members only fun tournament to be held on September 20th.

Please be reminded that registration closes for this Members Tournament on Saturday, September 13th at 8:00 pm.  If you do not have a partner you can register on your own and we will do our best to find you a partner.  You may click here to register.

Captains Meeting for Indoor Season

Please be reminded that there will be a captains meeting on September 16th at 9:00 am and again at 6:00 pm at Red Willow Church; we use the church main door not the gym entrance.  If you are planning to attend please email the venue manager by clicking here to let her know which captains session you will attend.

We would very much appreciate past indoor captains stepping forward as well as new captains.   We welcome anyone who wants to learn about being a captain to let the venuemanager@pickleballstalbert.ca know which session they are coming to for the Captains meeting noted above on September 16th.  People interested in learning the role of the captain are assured that if you are willing to step up, you will always have someone to help you and will be part of a team of two or three captains - you're not alone!

Our venue manager also reports the following:

  • Indoor venues at schools are posted now in the on line Calendars

  • The Red willow schedule will be posted shortly

  • Captains for sessions at YEG and One Possession will be chosen from those registered.  The venue manager will contact you with more details.

Red Willow and school sessions will start the first week of October!

Indoor Play Things to Remember

Hi ALL - As noted above, our indoor play season is almost upon us!  In order to get yourself prepared, we have compiled the following list of some items to remember:

Membership Cards

A reminder to everyone to bring their SAPC membership card to all our sessions and events.  The card can be printed or displayed on a member's smartphone and will indicate the member's date of membership and current rating level.  This is particularly important for new members and members who have recently achieved a new SAPC rating level.  This becomes important for all members come January or February at which time everyone needs to provide proof of their 2026 membership renewal.

With the changes to requirements for school venues (St. Albert residents only) bring your ID unless you have renewed your membership and the card now identifies you as resident of St. Albert.

Stickers for Indoor Play

As noted in previous Newsletters, don't forget to bring your stickers (if you need stickers, you must log into your account and buy these in the online store).   For those members who qualify for school venues, you will pay one sticker while Red Willow sessions require 2 stickers.  For other venues, payment requirements are outlined in the registration information for those sessions.

Clothing, Refreshment and Safety

You will also need a pair of clean, indoor athletic shoes for your indoor play.  Finally, keep yourself refreshed by bringing a water bottle or two (no other beverages are permitted at our indoor venues).   We encourage safety glasses as well.

Arrive on Time

It is important for members to be at the school venues on time as we are not to disturb the school caretakers by ringing the school bell.  Instead, the captain will assign someone to "man the door" at the start of the session.  No one will be allowed to enter the school once ten minutes has passed beyond the scheduled start time for each session.  Doors cannot be propped open at any time.  Play  is considered “drop in” only because you do not have to register - you must be on time!

Play Type

Depending on the numbers of members playing at the school venues, the play type may be paddle play or round robin as determined by the play session captain.

School Venues

Entry to the schools is by the main door.  Members will place outdoor shoes just inside the foyer.  All other belongings are to be brought inside the gym.  There is no leaving the school gyms to wander through the schools at any time.  Washrooms are accessible within all of the gyms except for Holy Family - their washrooms are just outside of the gym.

Visitors

There will be no visitors accepted for indoor play as space is limited and with over 900 members we need the space for those members.

Nets at Indoor Venues

Please ensure you know how to put up and take down nets when offering to help captains as doing it incorrectly causes problems.

Volunteer Opportunity - Mentoring Coordinator

As noted in our last Newsletter, we need a volunteer to take over the task of finding mentors and assigning them to the mentoring sessions.

Mentoring session: The club gives mentoring sessions, indoor and outdoor,  throughout the year.

A volunteer is needed to organize volunteers who will help give mentoring sessions to those who register.

TASKS:

  1. The “Organizer”  coordinates with Venue manager, about dates for the training. Things to watch for are tournaments or special events  that would impact volunteers and court availability. Once dates are set, identify what level the training will be for. Then recruit volunteer trainers.
  1. Send out an email to training volunteers (which can be found via our membership directory) asking them to let you know what dates they can help with.  Make the list of who can help on what dates and send confirmation to everyone.
  1. Correspond with “Regplay” administrator to set up the registration in the system.
  1. A few days before the training date, send an email to those who will be the volunteers for the coming session. This is just a reminder for everyone.  Ensure you have a lead trainer.

NOTE:  You yourself are not committed to being involved with the training. Your task is to organize the dates, find volunteers and communicate the plan.

If there are any questions in regards to this task feel free to call Nicole Currie at 780-220-5567.   If you have interest you may contact Nicole by clicking on this link.

If a volunteer is not found then mentoring will be on hold until a volunteer is found.

Volunteer Thank You

The Club asks all volunteers from the summer sessions, captains at Alpine and other volunteers from summer play to watch out for a registration e-mail for a Volunteer Appreciation event to take place at the Alpine courts on October 4th.  Registrations will open on September 20th.  The agenda will include a morning of pickleball followed by lunch - it's always a fun event!
