Summary of FTF Presentation/Info Meeting

The Club held a meeting on November 11th to which all members were invited.  There were 77 attendees to hear a presentation put on by our Facilities Task Force (FTF).  As Chairman of the FTF, Mike Bowen shared the Club's vision for changes to outdoor play at the Alpine Courts as well as the Club's plans to lease space for an indoor 4 to 6 court facility - a new indoor Club "home".

Some highlights of the presentation:

  • The Club is working with the City of St. Albert to have exclusive access to the Alpine Courts; should these negotiations be successful, court availability could almost double at this outdoor side; the Club would need to take on some additional risks and costs, but the Board is negotiating to maximize the benefits to Club members while minimizing incremental costs.

  • The FTF has explored many options for City land and site development to provide additional outdoor courts but has determined that limited St. Albert lands are available in the short term and any site/structure development would be extremely expensive.

  • The most cost effective option to provide new, high quality court access to members is to negotiate a lease for indoor pickleball suitable space within St. Albert or North Edmonton.

  • The FTF team has developed financial modeling which indicates that a 4 to 6 court facility could be financially viable based upon conservative estimates of revenues and expenses and the Club's current cash reserves.

The Board and the FTF members would like to thank all attendees for their participation and feedback!   While it was great to see 77 members at the meeting, knowing that we have 951 members, the Facilities team would like to hold a a special membership meeting via Zoom at 7:00 pm MT on December 9th (please save the date), in order to seek approval of these plans by the general membership (notwithstanding that these plans have already received the blessing of the SAPC Board). A formal meeting invitation with the proposed motions will be sent out to the membership shortly.

The goal is to be completely transparent and to fully engage as many members as possible on these exciting developments.

School Play - All Members Welcome

Message from our Venue Manager:

GREAT NEWS!!

I have been in contact with the City regarding this issue, and the impact on some of our Club members.  I am very happy to inform you the City of St. Albert has agreed that, as of now, all restrictions will be lifted.

Fantastic news, I know this has caused major concern and play disruption, but it is now resolved so come and play!  Thank you everyone for your patience in this matter.

Eileen McClean, Venue Manager

Also, did you know?  We wanted to share with you some facts to illustrate how important it is for community groups to have access to schools:

  • We are currently booking 31 gyms in 27 schools (+ a few other spaces, lunchrooms, classrooms, music rooms, etc.!)
  • 30 different groups are booked in schools for 2025-26
  • There are over 8000 hours booked for the upcoming school year
  • In the 2024-25 school year we kept track of cancellations/changes made by both the schools and the groups.
  • 190+ cancellations/no shows by user groups
  • 260+ changes by the schools

Lastly, it is noteworthy that on weekends the schools pay for security to come open the school at no charge to the Club!
